The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and World Health Organization (WHO) recommend starting solids around six months of age. Once your baby is showing signs of readiness, fish can be one of the first foods you offer, right alongside other purees or soft finger foods.

Fish is a true superfood for developing minds and bodies, packed with high-quality protein, vitamin D, and iron. It is particularly valued for its omega-3 fatty acids, like DHA, which are crucial for a baby's brain and eye development.

While fish is one of the top nine major food allergens, current pediatric guidance has shifted significantly. Experts, including the NHS, now suggest that early and regular introduction of allergenic foods, starting around six months, may actually help reduce the risk of developing a food allergy.

The key is to select fish that are low in mercury. Excellent choices for babies include wild salmon, cod, tilapia, pollock, and canned light tuna. You should avoid high-mercury fish like shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish.

Always ensure the fish is thoroughly cooked until it flakes easily with a fork, which destroys potential bacteria. Carefully remove every single bone, as they are a choking hazard, then you can mash or puree it with a little breast milk, formula, or water.

For a simple puree, blend the cooked, deboned fish with a familiar vegetable like sweet potato or carrot. If you're practicing baby-led weaning, you can offer a large, soft flake of fish for your baby to palm and self-feed.

A little goes a long way. Start with just a teaspoon or two, perhaps once or twice a week, to see how your baby tolerates it. The AAP suggests one to two small servings of low-mercury fish per week is a safe and beneficial amount for young children.

When you are introducing fish, your baby's system should be given time to adjust. Serve it as a single new food and wait three to five days before introducing another new food, carefully observing for any signs of a reaction.

An allergic reaction can include hives, facial swelling, vomiting, or diarrhea. While most reactions are mild, severe symptoms like difficulty breathing require immediate emergency medical attention.
